Job evaluation is a well-tried procedure for finding the appropriate relative values of different jobs as a first step in designing a fair wage-system acceptable to all parties. Unfortunately its role is frequently misunderstood. In the present inflationary situation it may, for example, be thought of as a last resource when all other remedies have failed to cure economic ills and a viable prices-and-income policy eludes grasp. This valuable new study from a noted authority sets out clearly what job evaluation is about and what it can do. The emphasis is less on describing systems - which are adequately documented already - than on placing the subject in context and examining how the principles find practical application"--Back cover
